The piece depicts Anyanwu, a mythical goddess character from Octavia Bulter's Wildseed. Anyanwu is an immortal shapeshifter with immense power, who becomes involved in a love and power struggle with another immortal masculine character. In the book, a portrait of Anyanwu and her biracial child is described as being reminiscent of a religious painting of the Madonna and Child and this an interpretation of that work.
